Town guilds
Charters, a chest, a seal and masterworks explore urban rights and working life.
Idioma del contenido
A guild chest, seal and banner represent the organisation of the town's historic craftspeople. Guild products and a masterwork accompany them. These objects relate to different aspects of working life: a finished product records a maker's skills, while the guild's symbols and furnishings represent a community practising the same craft.
Particular attention goes to bootmakers, tailors and wheelwrights. Their work appears within the story of town privileges. Copies of documents present rights granted by the Archbishop of Esztergom, the town's lord, and by monarchs. Workshop objects are therefore shown alongside evidence of the rules governing the local community.
This section presents Nové Zámky as a market town, following the military story of its fortifications. Objects concern economic and social life, while a separate part covers the town's educational and cultural institutions. Charters, craft products and guild symbols provide three distinct kinds of evidence for how residents organised their work and common affairs.
