The Early Middle Ages

Models of homes, clothing and equipment introduce the region's early medieval communities.

Sobre la pieza

A model of a sunken-floor dwelling depicts an early Slavic home. A vessel and a reconstructed cremation burial also represent the Slavic presence. Few objects from this period survive, so the house and burial are reconstructions rather than remains transferred intact. The distinction between an archaeological find and its reconstruction matters throughout this display.

Avar material includes belt fittings, pottery and everyday objects. Handmade reconstructions of clothing portray a warrior and a woman. Recreated weapons, equipment, a belt and jewellery accompany them. A reconstructed Avar bridle is a separate example of horse equipment displayed alongside objects worn by people.

The Great Moravian section continues this comparison of clothing and equipment. Male and female dress is shown with everyday objects, ornaments and ceramic vessels. A small wooden bucket is also reconstructed. The display brings together ways of living, dressing and burying the dead. Its models refer to different communities, rather than presenting a single universal medieval costume or house.
