Steam Route ride
A ride through the facilities used to service steam engines, from coal supply to locomotive cleaning.
Idioma del contenido
The Steam Route is travelled in a carriage hauled by a historic diesel locomotive. Its name refers to facilities once used by steam engines, not to the type of locomotive hauling the carriage. The route passes a coal crane, water cranes, a sand store and a cleaning pit. These formed part of the facilities that supplied locomotives with fuel, water and sand and supported their servicing. The ride shows the work carried out between journeys.
The trip takes about 30 minutes and stays entirely within the museum's sidings. It is not a journey to another town or a service on the public railway network. It starts and finishes beside the historic coal crane, with the same structure marking both ends of the ride.
A guide travels with the visitors, explaining the equipment along the route and its role in locomotive operation. The train journey is accompanied by an account of the depot's technical facilities.
