Sobre la pieza

The church from Rzochów is dedicated to St Mark the Evangelist. Its timber walls were built of larch and pine, clad externally with boards, and its roof covered with wooden shingles. A small bell turret rises above the roof; a separate bell tower from 1930 stands beside the church.

Almost all the interior furnishings are original. Paintings on canvas cover the chancel, imitating stone walls, columns and niches. The interior uses painting to give timber walls the appearance of monumental architecture. The painted niches contain the four evangelists with their symbols: John with an eagle, Mark with a lion, Matthew with an angel and Luke with an ox. Similar niches in the nave contain the apostles.

The main altar, with an image of the patron saint, stands before an illusionistic painting of a crowned curtain that completes its composition. Mark's image therefore appears in two places: among the evangelists in the chancel and at the centre of the altar. The museum opens the church during selected guided visits and events when its interior can be seen.
