Cytadelowcy
The people of Poznań and the fighting for their city in 1945.
Idioma del contenido
The exhibition on the fighting for Poznań in January and February 1945 explores the experiences of residents caught between German defenders and the advancing Red Army. Its local focus is the cytadelowcy, the people of Poznań who took part in the fighting for Fort Winiary. The section devoted to Polish participants contains four figures in the uniforms of formations involved in the battle for the German fortress of Festung Posen. Their clothing and equipment place the figures in their military context. They are brought together in the part of the exhibition addressing Polish involvement.
A multimedia database of participants provides information about individuals. Rather than telling the story solely through the names of armies and types of weapons, the display introduces people connected with events at the Citadel. The database complements the traditional presentation of objects and uniforms. A separate element lists the cytadelowcy who died in the fighting. Their names connect the Citadel’s military history with people who lived in Poznań.
