E. Scholtz’s painting combines mountain scenery with routes, nature and the history of exploring the Tatras.
Idioma del contenido
A painted panorama of the Tatras from 1938, by Professor E. Scholtz, is the main painting in the display about Kežmarok's mountain connections. It portrays the landscape while also conveying information about its exploration and use.
The picture marks routes up selected peaks and depicts wildlife, plants, traditional dress and place names of the period. It also includes people connected with Tatra history. Among them are Albert Łaski and his wife in a carriage.
Part of the High Tatras, including the area around Zelené pleso and the Biela voda valley, belonged to Kežmarok's lands as early as 1269. Herbalists, prospectors, smugglers, shepherds, hunters and students visited the mountains before modern tourism developed.
A relief map of the Tatras accompanies the painted landscape. Separate display cases explore tourism, mountaineering and skiing.
