Sobre el lugar

Muzeum Ziemi Sądeckiej - Gmach Główny

The Main Building is the seat of the Museum of the Sącz Land (Muzeum Ziemi Sądeckiej), a cultural institution of the Małopolska Region. Since 24 January 2024 the museum has used its name of 1938; it previously operated as the Regional Museum in Nowy Sącz. It occupies the former Austro-Hungarian Bank on Jagiellońska Street, erected in 1912 to a design by the Kraków architect Teodor Hoffmann and opened to visitors after modernisation in 2018.

On the exhibition floor the tour begins in the Mayors' Hall and leads through the town's history in 1867-1945: Galician autonomy, rebuilding after the 1894 fire, the Great War, the interwar years and the Second World War. A grand hall on the top storey hosts temporary exhibitions, concerts and meetings.

The last room recreates the studio of Bolesław Barbacki, a Nowy Sącz portraitist, man of the theatre and president of the "Sokół" society, shot by the Germans in 1941. The history of the town and the life of its painter meet here in a building that itself comes from the era it describes.
