Sobre la pieza

The Amur tiger, also called the Siberian tiger, lives in forests of eastern Russia and northeastern China. Long, thick fur and a layer of fat help it cope with a cold climate. Its coat is paler than that of many other tigers. Dark stripes break up its outline among trunks, grasses and shadows as it approaches prey.

Tigers hunt by stalking and ambush. They creep forward slowly rather than starting with a prolonged chase. Their prey includes deer and wild boar. Powerful front paws help hold a large animal, and their claws can retract during walking to preserve their sharpness.

Tigers swim well and readily use water. A river need not stop their journey. On a warm day, immersion offers a chance to cool down, so the sight of a big cat in water is entirely consistent with its natural behaviour.

Adult tigers generally live alone. They advertise their home ranges with scent and scratch marks on trees. A female raising cubs is an exception to solitary life. Cubs remain with their mother for a long time and gradually practise the skills needed to hunt independently. Play involving stalking and chasing forms part of this development.

Para niños

The Amur tiger lives in forests where winters can be very cold. Thick fur and a layer of fat protect it from the chill. Stripes help hide its outline among trunks, grass and shadows. In these surroundings, the big cat can approach its prey before it is noticed.

First it creeps forward slowly, then attacks from close range. It hunts deer and wild boar among other animals. During walking it retracts its claws to keep them sharp. Strong front paws help it hold its catch.

A tiger can also swim well. Water is not the same obstacle for it as for an animal afraid to get wet. Adult tigers usually live alone, but a mother cares for her young for a long time. Cubs practise stalking, chasing and other skills before they begin finding food without her help.
