Pottery kiln

A reconstruction exploring the making and use of clay vessels.

Sobre la pieza

The reconstructed pottery kiln represents one of the inhabitants’ crafts: making clay vessels. It forms part of the outdoor archaeological trail and is not a kiln that has survived intact for thousands of years. Wooden figures of potters holding vessels stand beside the reconstruction.

Pottery found at Rzucewo is notable for its decoration. Strips of clay were attached to some vessels. These additions changed the surface of the object, alongside patterns made directly on its walls.

The earliest forms of vessel had pointed bases. They were set permanently in hearths and used until they were worn out. Their shape suited a particular way of using them, different from placing a pot on a flat table.

Excavations yield fragments of clay vessels; the reconstruction draws attention to the people who made them. Decoration, the shape of a base and the place where a pot was used can each be considered separately. Each detail answers a different question about a potter's work and the everyday contents of a home.

The outdoor reconstructions and viewpoint are accessible all year, 24 hours a day.

Clay provided the settlement's inhabitants with material for vessels. The pottery kiln in the park is a reconstruction: a modern recreation of an old structure. Wooden figures of potters with vessels stand nearby. They show people doing work whose traces archaeologists discover in the ground.

Vessels from Rzucewo were decorated. Sometimes strips of clay were attached to them. Yet not every pot resembled those in today's kitchens. The earliest had pointed bases and were permanently set into hearths. They were used there until they wore out.

Researchers often find only broken pieces of pottery. Their shapes and patterns provide clues about the complete vessels. Beside the kiln, these small finds can be linked to the potter's tasks: shaping a vessel, adding decoration and preparing it for everyday use.
