Gołubieński Ogród Botaniczny
Gołubie Botanical Garden grew out of Zbigniew and Ludwika Butowski’s passion for gardening. In Gołubie, Kashubia, their private collection of ornamental plants gradually developed into a garden serving education, research and plant conservation. Its grounds include a flat area and the north-facing slope of the upper terrace of Lake Patulskie. Changes in gradient are therefore part of the walk, as is the transition from flowering shrubs to collections of trees.
The garden is divided into ecological, medicinal and ornamental plant sections, an arboretum and wooded areas. In May and June, rhododendrons and azaleas particularly attract attention. Rare and threatened plants and trees of distant origin offer a different kind of discovery. The collection has included Wollemi pine, kauri, Taiwania and the sandarac tree. Their leaves and cones reveal the variety within conifers.
Behind the planting lies daily work: recording plants’ origins, observing flowering and growth, and studying how species from other regions cope with local conditions. Labels give the Polish and Latin names and the botanical family. Scientific support from the University of Gdańsk and cooperation with researchers connect the family enterprise with the world of science.
Visitors can follow marked paths independently or arrange a guided visit in advance. The garden offers activities about protected plants, herbs and ancient plant lineages. Themed paths explore nature’s spring awakening and botanical curiosities. Allow time to look closely at leaves, flowers and name labels.
Pour les enfants
In Gołubie, a garden grew from the Butowski family’s enthusiasm. Zbigniew and Ludwika collected ornamental plants, and their collection gradually became a botanical garden. Here, plants do more than decorate the paths. They help people learn about nature and species becoming rarer in the wild.
A walk introduces several different collections. There are medicinal plants, protected plants, flowering shrubs and an arboretum: a collection of trees and shrubs. Rhododendrons and azaleas attract attention in May and June. Rare trees such as Wollemi pine and kauri show that not every conifer has leaves like pine needles.
A plant label is like an identity card: it gives the Polish and Latin names and the family the plant belongs to. Gardeners also record where a plant came from and how it grows. They observe when flowers appear and how plants from distant countries cope in Kashubia.
The paths cross flat ground and a slope. You can explore independently, while guided visits need arranging in advance. The garden’s activities include stories about herbs and protected plants. Choose two different labels and compare the family names: very different-looking plants may turn out to be relatives.
