À propos du lieu

Grodzisko Owidz

Grodzisko Owidz stands on a moraine hill in a bend of the Wierzyca, near Starogard Gdański. Wooden houses, a gate and a palisade form a reconstruction opened in 2012. Beneath it lies a much older history: traces of a Lusatian-culture settlement and a medieval stronghold probably founded in the early eleventh century.

The buildings introduce both defence and everyday life. Ten reconstructed houses recall the homes and occupations of the community, including those of a herbalist and a fisherman. An open square, the majdan, served as a meeting place. The hill and river helped protect the stronghold, while archaeologists continue to investigate its past through the ground and its finds.

Modern facilities below the historic area include an amphitheatre and kayak landings. Demonstrations, workshops and events have their own scheduled dates. Groups require advance booking. Seven of the ten houses are open to visitors; the other three are used for workshops and are not open for sightseeing. Individual visitors can explore the interiors of the houses open to visitors, as well as the observation tower and gate tower, on their own. During the tourist season, a guided tour of the stronghold is included in the admission ticket. The former Museum of Slavic Mythology closed in 2025, and the playground is temporarily closed.

Free visitor parking is beside the woodland on Rycerska Street. The route up to the hillfort has no dedicated access ramp, and the houses have high thresholds. This matters when planning a visit with a pushchair or with reduced mobility.

Pour les enfants

Grodzisko Owidz helps us see what an early stronghold may have looked like. Wooden houses, a gate and a palisade, a fence of wooden stakes, have been recreated on the hill beside the Wierzyca. These buildings opened to visitors in 2012. The hill itself had been inhabited many centuries earlier.

Warriors, merchants and craftspeople were among the residents. An open meeting square between the houses was called the majdan. Today you can look at the reconstruction and learn about the site’s history. Demonstrations and workshops take place on scheduled dates.

Below the hill are a modern amphitheatre and kayak landings. The former mythology museum is no longer open, and the playground is temporarily closed. Before visiting, check the opening hours. Seven of the ten houses are open to visitors; the other three are used for workshops and are not open for sightseeing. Individual visitors can explore the interiors of the houses open to visitors, as well as the observation tower and gate tower, on their own. The approach goes uphill, and the houses have high thresholds.
