History of Hont

The Middle Ages and the twentieth century mark the chronological limits of this collection. Its focus is central Hont, the part of the region that includes Šahy. Regional history is presented through people involved in political and cultural life, together with surviving evidence of their activities.

Portraits depict prominent politicians and cultural figures. They are accompanied by original documents and copies, two different forms of historical evidence. A face in a portrait and a written record approach the past differently: one presents an individual, while the other helps trace particular affairs and events.

Publications by writers, scholars and politicians from central Hont form another strand. They show these people's work alongside their likenesses, rather than reducing the display to a list of names. The exhibits also include edged weapons and hand-held firearms from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Documents, books and weapons give the region's history a tangible presence.
