À propos de l’objet

Adriena Kutaková, an artist associated with Šahy, designed this memorial at the request of victims' relatives. It commemorates Holocaust victims from Šahy and the surrounding villages. Their names connect remembrance of the Holocaust with individual people who lived in this region before the war.

The composition combines an artistic evocation of the local ghetto with a list of victims. These elements complement each other: the sculptural form recalls imprisonment, while the written names preserve the identities of those murdered. This is not an anonymous memorial to the war as a whole, but a commemoration of a particular community.

A sizeable Jewish population settled in Šahy during the nineteenth century and contributed to the economic development of the former county centre. The Second World War brought the community's destruction. The memorial records victims from 1939–1945, linking the town's history with the lives of families from neighbouring villages as well.
