À propos de l’objet

The Burgrave House belonged to the castle’s service area. After the office of burgrave was abolished in 1625, the building became the seat of estate administration; it also underwent successive alterations. In the late nineteenth century, Josef Mocker transformed this part of the complex. Works begun in 1894 included reconstruction of part of the buildings and demolition of the earlier house and adjoining fortifications.

The eastern ground floor, with late Gothic interiors, was adapted as a visitor centre. Ticket desks, souvenir sales and a café occupy historic rooms in the castle’s former service premises. Displays on winemaking and Karlštejn’s building history were prepared in the Gothic cellars, with a virtual model showing the castle before Mocker’s reconstruction. Comparing the model with today’s buildings helps reveal the scale of later changes.

The revitalisation also included newly uncovered Gothic cellars below the courtyard. Stone details and archaeological finds were displayed there, and access to the visitor centre was created. The project combined historic underground spaces with the needs of a modern visit: ticket facilities, toilets and a place to rest, while retaining opportunities to view old architectural elements.

Pour les enfants

The burgrave was an official associated with managing the castle. His building, the Burgrave House, belonged to Karlštejn’s service area. It later housed the estate administration. In the late nineteenth century, Josef Mocker’s designs substantially altered it.

Today the historic ground-floor rooms contain a visitor centre with ticket desks and a café. Cellar displays explore winemaking and changes to the castle’s buildings. A virtual model shows the castle before Mocker’s work, helping visitors compare its earlier and present appearance.
