Zaułek Heliktytowy (Helictite Nook)

Twisted formations show that calcite does not always grow into a straight, vertical pendant.

À propos de l’objet

Helictites form irregular, often branching projections that twist and grow in different directions. This sets them apart from a typical stalactite extending downwards. They do not break the laws of physics: their shape is related to how water reaches the formation and deposits mineral material. A narrowed or blocked feeding channel can contribute to their development.

These forms grow on walls and ceilings, but also on other formations, including stalactites and flowstone. Flowstone is a coating of calcite deposited over a rock surface, not a separate type of host rock. Beyond the helictites are sheets of flowstone in several colours. Their colouring comes from traces of metals, including iron and manganese. A formation's shape and colour therefore reveal different aspects of its history: how it grew and what was deposited.

The walk continues to the Water Corridor, once partly flooded, and then towards the Primitive Man Corridor. The nook is therefore not the final chamber before the exit. After these small, twisting formations, the route reveals further traces of water's activity, both hollowing out the cave and depositing calcite within it.
