Underground waterfall

Steps through a seventeenth-century shaft lead down to the underground waterfall chamber. The route descends about 23 metres; on the eighth level, a winding passage reaches water flowing down a sloping rock surface. Lighting picks out the stream and the stone around it. Reverberation in the enclosed chamber amplifies the sound of the water.

Another level of workings lies below the waterfall. It was opened after two roof falls were cleared, with the work completed in 2007. Opening the passage allowed groups to descend below the waterfall and continue through the lower workings. Today, visitors proceed from the waterfall to the underground train, which takes them outside. The waterfall is therefore viewed within former mining infrastructure, between the mine's levels.
