À propos du lieu

Miejski Ogród Zoologiczny im. Antoniny i Jana Żabińskich w Warszawie

Warsaw Zoo opened in the Praga district on 11 March 1928. Its first director was Wenanty Burdziński, succeeded in 1929 by Jan Żabiński. Today's zoo brings together spacious enclosures, animal houses and places whose history reaches beyond animal breeding.

During the German occupation, Antonina and Jan Żabiński sheltered Jews fleeing persecution in the zoo grounds and their home. In 1965 they received the title Righteous Among the Nations. Their villa remains within the zoo, and the institution now bears their names. Following wartime destruction, the zoo reopened in 1949.

A walk today introduces animals with very different ways of life. A flamingo filters food from water, a giraffe selects leaves with a grasping tongue, and an elephant uses its trunk with surprising precision for such a large animal. The hippopotamus house offers an underwater view of Hugo. The new penguin enclosure, opened in June 2026, provides a similar opportunity through the glass of its pool.

The zoo's work includes breeding threatened species, research and education. It also runs the Bird Asylum and a CITES centre, helping animals in need of care. The animals seen during a visit belong to a wider effort to understand their needs, look after them and protect the environments they come from.

Pour les enfants

At Warsaw Zoo, different animals show different ways to manage everyday tasks. A flamingo has a bill that works like a sieve, an elephant picks up food with its trunk, and a kangaroo moves in powerful hops. Penguins and the hippopotamus can also be watched through pool windows, revealing what water normally hides.

The zoo opened in 1928. It is named after Antonina and Jan Żabiński. During the war, they helped persecuted people by hiding them in the zoo grounds and their home. Their villa still stands in the garden. This place tells stories about animals and about people who helped others.

Today, keepers care for animals from different parts of the world. The zoo also runs a Bird Asylum where wild birds receive help. On a walk you will meet large plant-eating mammals, mountain cats and birds from African coasts. Each has different needs. We do not feed or disturb the animals: watching quietly gives them room to carry on with their own activities.
