À propos de l’objet

In 1753, master potter Joppe made the Great Pot, a demonstration of Bolesławiec's pottery skills. The original stood 2.15 metres high, measured four metres around its widest point and held 1,970 litres. The museum exhibition includes a copy of this vessel.

The pot was initially displayed in a wooden house on Zgorzelecka Street.

After 140 years, in 1893, it was moved to a tower beside the town pond. There it was displayed with other examples of local craftsmanship. The Municipal Museum became its next exhibition venue.

Until 1945, the pot was one of the museum collection's most valuable objects. Its subsequent fate remains uncertain, as does that of the other collections lost towards the end of the Second World War. Today's copy therefore represents a work known from the pre-war museum's history, rather than master Joppe's surviving original.
