The two fortresses of Nové Zámky

Models of fortifications and Ottoman-period objects reveal the town's military past.

À propos de l’objet

Nové Zámky had two successive fortresses, whose construction and development are represented by separate models. The second was a modern Renaissance fortification. Copies of maps and engravings accompany the models, depicting the old defences differently from objects excavated from the ground. An orillon bastion is modelled alongside the complete fortresses.

Firearms and edged weapons introduce the Ottoman wars and the uprisings of the estates. Turkish books, money and everyday objects accompany them. The military theme therefore extends beyond arms to material traces of people living in the town under Ottoman rule.

A separate thread concerns the liberation of Nové Zámky from Ottoman rule and the uprising led by Francis II Rákóczi. These events form part of the exhibition's chronological account of political change. Models distinguish the successive defensive schemes, while maps, engravings and period objects help explain their use. The display is not about a single surviving castle, but two former systems of fortification and the events associated with them.
