A post mill from the late 19th century, whose sails drive the milling mechanism.
Langue du contenu
The post mill from Zarębki dates from the late 19th century. Its sails drive the milling machinery: the movement of the sails becomes the power needed to process grain inside the building. A stationary trestle and upright post support the structure, allowing the entire mill body to turn. A tailpole was used to position the building so that its sails faced the wind. Aligning the mill was part of the work: the building turned while its base stayed in place.
The four sails had wooden boards whose area could be adjusted to the strength of the wind. The interior was divided into two levels and the walls clad with boards. The gabled roof is covered with wooden shingles and has a half-hip at the sail end. The rotating body distinguishes this post mill from mills where only the roof section and sails turn to face the wind. It stands in the Lasowiak sector among historic village buildings. Occasional demonstrations show the sails turning and the machinery they power at work.
