À propos de l’objet

Irena was built in Bydgoszcz in 1936. Saturnin Marzątka constructed her on a meadow beside the Brda as a covered, riveted steel barge with three cargo holds. She belongs to the type of barge known in Poland as a berlinka. Her former cargo spaces are central to the story of her later conversion.

Until 1989 the vessel worked on the Bydgoszcz Canal and the Oder Waterway. She then went to Szczecin, where she stored equipment from other barges. The aft hold provided sleeping accommodation for eight workers, while a cabin housed dispatching and vessel-supervision facilities.

After repairs to the bottom plating and conservation of the hull, the barge was brought to Wrocław on 6 December 2004. In 2014-2015 she was rebuilt with support from the city and businesses. In early 2016 exhibition systems and multimedia equipment were installed for educational programmes.

The holds began their new role as early as December 2015, hosting a seminar of the Lower Silesian Aviation Academy followed by a meeting of the Bractwo Mokrego Pokładu river enthusiasts’ association. Space once used for cargo became part of the foundation’s cultural activities.

Irena is a former cargo barge, of a type called a berlinka. Saturnin Marzątka built her in 1936 in Bydgoszcz, on a meadow beside the Brda. Her steel plates were joined with rivets. She had three covered holds: large spaces for carrying goods. She worked on the Bydgoszcz Canal and the Oder Waterway until 1989.

Later, in Szczecin, she was used to store equipment from other barges. Sleeping accommodation for eight workers was fitted in the aft section, at the back of the vessel. Irena reached Wrocław on 6 December 2004. Following another rebuilding project, her holds were given a new purpose as places for exhibitions and learning. The first meetings took place in December 2015. Early the following year the barge received exhibition and multimedia equipment.
