Langue du contenu
The 438-metre tunnel beneath Żarnowska Hill was built between spring 1940 and summer 1941. Germany's Organisation Todt designed and constructed it as part of the Anlage Süd complex, which also included structures at Stępina-Cieszyna. The shelter was driven through the hill and lies entirely underground. It has a circular cross-section 8.87 metres in diameter, walls of concrete and reinforced concrete, and a vault made from clinker bricks laid in cement mortar.
On 27-28 August 1941, Hitler's staff train, “Amerika”, was stationed here. Hitler's meeting with Benito Mussolini took place in Stępina, not inside the Strzyżów tunnel. The complex also included technical shelters, a utility tunnel, a single-track railway siding and a wooden platform between the tunnel and the station. The utility tunnel and technical shelters survive.
Rectangular portals at either end are 5.4 metres wide and 4.5 metres high. They contain two-part iron doors with ventilation openings at the top; the original gates remain in place.
