À propos de l’objet

Anton Schmidt painted the chapel's frescoes in 1750-1752, using the illusionistic language of the late Baroque. The Austrian-born painter worked in the mining towns of central Slovakia. The chapel is dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. Its vault carries Old and New Testament scenes, an allegory of the Church, angels playing music, Church Fathers and the four Evangelists with their attributes.

The lower parts of the side walls are decorated with monochrome grisaille paintings of St Anthony of Padua and St Francis Xavier. These use colour differently from the elaborate scenes overhead. On the side altar of St Joseph with the Child stands a glass coffin containing a wax-and-wood figure of John of Nepomuk, patron saint of the Koháry family. The figure depicts the saint; it is not his body or a relic.

During conservation work in 2002-2003, a vessel containing a mummified heart was found in a stone cavity beside the entrance to the sacristy. The heart's origin remains unknown.
