The first room of the history exhibition, introducing the self-governing Nowy Sącz of the era of Galician autonomy.
Langue du contenu
The Mayors' Hall introduces the exhibition on the history of Nowy Sącz in 1867-1945, in which the town's self-government in the era of Galician autonomy takes a special place. The exhibition opened together with the museum's new premises in April 2018.
In the autonomy era the mayors of Nowy Sącz modernised the town. From 8 March 1900 to November 1918, the office was held by Władysław Barbacki, a lawyer with an 1878 doctorate in law and administration from the Jagiellonian University. During his term a telephone line linked Nowy Sącz with Kraków, Krynica and Szczawnica in 1905, and the town was electrified in 1912. Water mains and sewers were built, and the town organised and opened a public library.
In 1916 the town council made Barbacki an honorary citizen of Nowy Sącz. The year of electrification is also the year the bank building now housing the museum was built.
