Wooden grave crosses
Original crosses from Detva, ranging from plain forms to colourful carved ornament.
Langue du contenu
These wooden grave crosses came from Detva's cemetery. They are not modern copies: the museum group consists of authentic objects, both painted and unpainted. They reach up to two metres in height. Some have simple, undecorated forms, while others carry motifs traditional to Podpoľanie.
The display opened on 5 May 2021, following construction work completed the previous year. A shelter inspired by local folk architecture protects the crosses. Its purpose is to shield the wooden objects from the weather. Paving and a step-free access path with a handrail were also installed to allow access for people with reduced mobility.
Comparing the decorated and plain examples shows that there was no single required form for a Detva grave cross. Colour, carving and restrained decoration appear side by side within the same cemetery tradition. The surroundings were also designed for workshops and museum activities; a restored low wall can serve as seating or as a work surface.
