Twierdza Osowiec
Osowiec Fortress was built at a narrow section of the Biebrza valley, where a crossing through the marshes mattered for troop movements and the railway. Four forts, constructed between 1882 and 1892 and later modernised, guarded the western border of the Russian Empire.
Its defence during the First World War brought Osowiec wider recognition. After the German gas attack on 6 August 1915, surviving defenders counterattacked in an action known as the Attack of the Dead Men. The Russian garrison left the fortress later that month during a retreat ordered in response to the wider situation on the front.
Today the history of the defences can be explored on the approaches to Fort I and around Fort IV. Shelters, barrack remains, the moat and observation positions stand beside pine woodland and wetlands. The paths connect defensive architecture with the landscape that originally formed part of the fortifications.
