Galeria Pępowo - VW Museum

Galeria Pępowo - VW Museum grew from Ewa and Zenon Suchecki’s personal passion for Volkswagens. Its beginnings lie in family cars and memories associated with the Beetle. Individual purchases gradually became a collection, opened to visitors in 2008. The museum is in Pępowo, in Kashubia, on Armii Krajowej Street.

The cars illustrate different uses of one manufacturer’s engineering. Rounded Beetles share the collection’s story with working Transporters and the elegant Karmann Ghia. The K70 marks the move towards a front engine and front-wheel drive, while the Type 3 Variant shows how a rear engine could be combined with a practical estate body. The Golf Cabriolet represents a later era and another approach to open-top driving.

The lives of individual cars can be as interesting as their construction. The K70 retained a book of journeys and rallies kept by its previous owners. Buying a pickup in California required a return trip to recover the vehicle. A campervan accompanied the Sucheckis on long journeys. These personal connections explain why collecting cars became more than selecting further models for a catalogue.

The full-size cars are complemented by a collection of miniatures in different scales. Many body shapes fit into the display cases and can be compared at close quarters. Placing models alongside real cars draws attention to proportions, details and changes in styling, from rounded outlines to more angular forms.

Ewa and Zenon Suchecki collected Volkswagen cars in Pępowo. It began with the Beetle and memories associated with that car. The collection grew until the museum opened in 2008. It includes passenger cars, commercial vehicles and small models arranged in display cases.

Volkswagens do not all look alike. The Beetle has a rounded roof, the Karmann Ghia a low body, and the Transporter plenty of space for people or loads. The K70 has its engine at the front. In the Type 3 Variant, the engine is tucked beneath the rear floor, leaving room for luggage above.

Some cars brought stories of their own. The K70’s previous owners recorded their journeys in a special book. The owners had to return to California to recover a pickup bought there. A campervan is also connected with the Sucheckis’ long journeys.

Miniature cars stand in the display cases. They differ in scale, meaning how much smaller they are than the real thing. The same real car can have a model larger than a hand or a very small one. Their shapes help show how designers’ ideas changed.
