An orangutan spends most of its day high in the canopy of a tropical forest. Its long arms support its body and help it move between branches. Its tree-dwelling life is also linked to its food: fruit plays an important role in a diet that includes leaves, flowers and bark.

It does not eat plants alone. It may also consume insects and even small mammals. It uses tools when gathering food. A carefully used object can help it reach food that cannot simply be picked from a branch. These abilities are part of everyday life in the forest, alongside the skilful use of its hands.

A young orangutan depends on its mother for a long time. A female usually gives birth to one infant and provides care for many years. The youngster only leaves its mother at around eight or nine years of age. This is a very long period compared with the age at which many other mammals become independent.

Forest loss is a particular threat to orangutans, including the conversion of forests into oil-palm plantations. Places to move, rest and find food disappear. Protecting these apes means preserving the whole environment on which their life in the trees depends.

An orangutan's home is high in the treetops. Long arms help it hold on to branches and move between them. In the forest it eats fruit, leaves, flowers and bark, as well as insects.

Orangutans can use tools to obtain food. This means using an object to carry out a task. A youngster stays with its mother for many years. It only leaves her when it is around eight or nine years old.

When a tropical forest is cut down, an orangutan loses its home and source of food. Some forests disappear to make way for oil-palm plantations. Protecting trees is therefore very important for these apes, which spend most of their day above the ground.
