Owidz hillfort occupies the summit of a moraine hill on the western bank of the Wierzyca. The hill forms part of a glacial promontory projecting into the river valley. This position helped its inhabitants watch the surrounding area and defend their settlement. The earliest identified occupation dates to the tenth century BC. Pottery and radiocarbon dating point to a Bronze Age settlement of the Lusatian culture.

The medieval stronghold was probably established in the early eleventh century and remained in use until at least the mid-twelfth century. Coins and pottery are among the finds used to date it. The site was first surveyed in 1888. Systematic excavations took place in 1973-1975, while rescue archaeology in 2010 preceded construction of the present reconstruction. The wooden buildings, opened in 2012, help visitors picture the former stronghold; the hill itself is an authentic archaeological site.

Gyerekeknek

The hill beside the Wierzyca was inhabited long before the Middle Ages. Archaeologists found traces of a Bronze Age settlement here. Pieces of pottery and special tests on excavated materials help them work out how old a settlement is.

The medieval stronghold was probably founded in the early eleventh century. Its high position helped people watch the surrounding area. The wooden buildings seen today are a reconstruction opened in 2012. The hill is the actual site of earlier settlements, while the buildings help explain how their inhabitants may have lived.
