The Great Tower crowns Karlštejn’s stepped arrangement. It stands highest on the rocky spur, above the Imperial Palace and Marian Tower; its monumental bulk completes the fortified complex. The Chapel of the Holy Cross was created on its second floor by converting a planned residential chamber. The early design included a room with four windows, a fireplace and a latrine before it became a treasury.

The upper storeys above the chapel are visited on “Celým hradem”, the tour of the entire castle. Reaching them forms the final section of the programme, ending with the view from the tower. The tour first passes through imperial rooms and chapels. The upper tower is therefore a distinct extension, rather than an automatic addition to every visit to the chapel; the regular chapels programme does not provide the same access.

In the early 1360s, Charles IV decided to place the imperial coronation treasury at the castle. The tower was still under construction, allowing the chambers’ purpose to change. Later Renaissance rebuilding also affected its façades, which received monumental heraldic paintings. Nineteenth-century restoration reconstructed the bridge connection to the smaller tower.

Gyerekeknek

The Great Tower stands highest among the castle’s main buildings. The Marian Tower and Imperial Palace lie below it. The Chapel of the Holy Cross was created on its second floor, although a residential room with windows, a fireplace and a latrine had originally been planned there.

Even higher are rooms visited on “Celým hradem”. After the chambers and chapels, visitors reach the upper tower and enjoy the view. Not every programme includes this part: visiting the chapels alone does not give access to the upper floors.
