Warsaw Zoo keeps snow leopards, cats native to the mountains of Asia. On 11 July 2026, the female Suri gave birth to three cubs here. This dated chapter in the group's history accompanies the species' defining feature: a body adapted to steep, cold and rocky landscapes.
Pale grey fur with dark markings breaks up the animal's outline against rocks. A dense coat helps retain warmth, and its thickness changes with the seasons. In the wild, snow leopards also move between elevations as they follow the animals they hunt.
Broad paws with furry undersides protect the feet and make travelling across snow easier. A long, heavy tail helps with balance during climbing and jumping. Shorter forelimbs and a strong chest also support movement across demanding terrain.
Snow leopards are usually solitary and most active at dawn and dusk. They hunt animals including blue sheep, ibex and marmots. Scent marks and traces left on rocks and soil communicate their presence. The female raises the cubs, choosing a sheltered place and gradually preparing them for independent life in the mountains.

Good balance is useful in the mountains. A snow leopard has a long tail that helps it stay steady while jumping and climbing. Its paws are broad and covered with fur underneath. They make walking on snow easier and protect the feet.
Wild snow leopards usually live alone. They are particularly active at dawn and dusk, when they search for prey such as mountain hoofed mammals and marmots. The mother raises her cubs in a sheltered place. As they grow stronger, the young learn the skills they will need for mountain life.
