Warsaw's African lions are called Zulus and Sofia. The male is distinguished by a mane, whose size and colour change with age and vary between individuals. A mane affects how a lion appears to females and rivals, and also helps protect the neck during fights.

Lions are unusual among cats because they live in lasting social groups. Related females and their cubs form the core of a pride, accompanied by adult males. Lionesses cooperate in hunting and caring for their young. A cub may even drink milk from another nursing female in the same pride.

Roaring is a form of communication. It helps maintain contact within the group and tells other lions that a territory is occupied. Lions also use scent marks. Males patrol and defend the territory, while familiar animals recognise one another through a network of calls and smells.

Lions spend much of the day resting, with shorter bursts of intense activity. In the wild they often hunt at dusk, during the night and around dawn. Antelopes and other hoofed mammals are among their prey. A quietly resting lion follows the rhythm of a predator that does not need to be moving throughout the day.

Lions often live together, which is unusual among cats. A pride includes related lionesses, their cubs and adult males. Females help one another hunt and raise the young. Zulus and Sofia live in Warsaw. Zulus has a mane that protects his neck and gives him his familiar outline.

A roar does not only mean anger. It is also a message for other lions. It can announce that a territory is occupied and help members of a pride keep in contact. Lions leave scent marks as well.

A lion lying down is not necessarily bored. These cats naturally spend a lot of time resting. In the wild they may be active at night, at dawn and at dusk, when they hunt animals such as antelopes. Long breaks alternate with short periods of effort, while the pride's life depends on cooperation.
