Sumatran orangutan
A tree-dwelling ape that builds sleeping nests, and the story of a significant birth in Łódź.
A tartalom nyelve
Every evening, an orangutan prepares a sleeping nest in the treetops. Life among branches is one of the defining features of these large apes. Sumatran orangutans live naturally on the Indonesian island of Sumatra. Their diet includes fruit, leaves, bark and flowers, with occasional small animals and birds’ eggs.
Adult males are considerably larger than females, and developed males have distinctive cheek pads framing the face. These enlarged areas on either side of the head give it a broad outline. On 1 April 2026, a male Sumatran orangutan was born at Łódź’s Orientarium. His mother was Ketawa; this was the first birth of the species in a Polish zoo. Keepers reported a normal delivery and attentive maternal care.
In the wild, the loss of rainforest is the main problem. Clearance for oil palm plantations and fires reduce the space where orangutans can find food and build nests. Capture of young animals is another threat. Ketawa’s story connects an arboreal ape’s everyday behaviour with breeding an endangered species. The Łódź birth is a specific achievement in that work, rather than a guarantee that Sumatra’s forests are now safe.
Gyerekeknek
An orangutan does not simply lie down anywhere in the evening. It prepares a sleeping nest among the branches. It is a large ape whose life is closely linked to trees.
On Sumatra it finds fruit, leaves, bark and flowers. Sometimes it also eats small animals or birds’ eggs. An adult male is larger than a female and may have broad cheek pads on the sides of his face.
Something important happened at Łódź Zoo: on 1 April 2026, Ketawa gave birth to a son. This was the first Sumatran orangutan birth in a Polish zoo. His mother cared for him from the start. Wild orangutans still need protected forests, because logging and fires destroy the trees where they eat, travel and sleep.
