Variable-sweep wings adapted the aircraft to different flying speeds.

A tárgyról

Aircraft 8207 is a Su-22M4, a single-seat version of the Soviet fighter-bomber. Its distinguishing feature is its variable-sweep wings, adjusted to suit the speed and stage of flight. During take-off, landing and slow flight, a small sweep angle helped generate more lift; at high speeds, greater sweep reduced drag. The same aircraft had to reconcile the demands of accelerating along a runway with those of fast flight.

Depending on the wing position, the Su-22M4's wingspan ranged from 10.02 to 13.65 metres. An AL-21F3 turbojet provided power, while the M4's equipment included the PrNK-54 navigation and targeting system with an Orbita computer. Su-22M4 was the export designation of the Su-17M4. Poland ended its use of the Su-22 family in September 2025, so the museum aircraft represents a completed chapter of its service history.

The Su-22M4 numbered 8207 has wings whose position could change during flight. They did not flap like a bird's wings. Instead, they swept farther back or spread more widely to the sides. During take-off, landing and slow flight, less sweep helped produce the force that lifted the aircraft. At high speed, greater sweep reduced air resistance.

The wing position changed the wingspan, which means the distance between the wingtips. It ranged from 10.02 to 13.65 metres. An AL-21F3 jet engine powered the aircraft. There was room for one pilot, who had a navigation and targeting system with a computer called Orbita.

The Su-22M4 was the version of the Su-17M4 made for sale to other countries. This kind of aircraft combined fighter and bomber duties. Poland stopped using the Su-22 family in September 2025. The museum example shows a design that previously served in military aviation.
