The Il-28 in the outdoor collection represents the post-war generation of jet aircraft. The Ilyushin design bureau developed this twin-engined bomber in 1948. It therefore originated after the Second World War, whose equipment forms another important part of the museum’s displays. The first prototype used British Rolls-Royce Nene engines. These were followed by Soviet RD-45 equivalents, with further development leading to more powerful VK-1 engines. The design’s history thus includes a change in powerplants, from imported engines to successive Soviet designs.
Il-28 production began in 1949. The first aircraft reached combat units in 1950. These dates concern the development of the aircraft type represented by the Poznań exhibit. Reconnaissance versions were also developed from the bomber design. In the Il-28R, a compartment in the fuselage held cameras and additional equipment. Poland bought a total of 80 combat Il-28s in bomber and reconnaissance versions. Some aircraft were later adapted for electronic warfare duties.
