Poznań’s T-34-85 was built in 1944 at Factory No. 112, Krasnoye Sormovo, in Gorky. It belongs to the wartime production of this medium tank. In 2020, the museum vehicle underwent restoration and returned to working order. The number 85 denotes the gun’s calibre in millimetres. Earlier T-34s had a 76 mm gun. The change in armament responded to the need to engage increasingly well-armoured German vehicles. The similar names therefore conceal an important change in design.

The crew consisted of five people: commander, gunner, loader, radio operator who also operated a machine gun, and driver. Their duties covered driving, communications and operating the weapons. The engine sat at the rear of the hull, while crew stations occupied other parts of the cramped interior. Wide tracks run along both sides. Ten large road wheels support the tank’s weight on them. Sloping hull plates and additional cylindrical external tanks are distinctive features. The museum vehicle carries tactical number 1214.

This T-34-85 was built in 1944 at a factory in Gorky. It was restored in 2020 and could move again. The number 85 in its name means the gun’s calibre: 85 millimetres. Older T-34s had a gun with a smaller calibre.

Five people worked inside. The driver drove, the commander led the crew, and the others handled communications and weapons. The engine was at the rear. Instead of ordinary tyres, the vehicle has tracks: wide bands made of linked metal pieces. They run around ten large road wheels. The external tanks are shaped like cylinders and the hull plates are angled. The number 1214 appears on the tank.
