The Armaments Museum occupies the former Detached Laboratory, known in German as Special Laboratorium. It formed part of Fort Winiary’s support facilities. The building was probably erected in 1888/1889, many decades after construction of Poznań’s Citadel began. The word “laboratory” referred to work with military materials. Gunpowder was initially stored here and ammunition was manufactured. Later, the building served solely as a store. It was a place for preparing and keeping supplies, rather than an artillery position firing at an enemy.
It is one of the few buildings of Fort Winiary to have survived intact. Its preserved interior now houses displays of weapons. The exhibits include Soviet and German small arms, ammunition, equipment and uniforms. Adaptation for the new purpose began in 1964, while the park on the Citadel was being created. Some military objects entered the collection after being found during work on the site. The building’s history is therefore linked with that of objects recovered from the ground.

This building used to be a military laboratory. It was not a place for school experiments. Gunpowder was stored here and ammunition was prepared. Later, it became a storehouse for supplies. It was probably built in 1888/1889 as part of Fort Winiary.
Many of the fort’s old buildings have disappeared, but this one survived intact. In 1964, work began to turn it into a museum. Its interior now holds old uniforms, soldiers’ equipment and weapons. Some objects were discovered during work in Citadel Park. Things recovered from the ground also help historians learn about the past of this place.
