Fajwel Szyld’s house from Wojsławice
A Jewish family home combining daily life with the work of a shoemaker and leather trader.
A tartalom nyelve
Before the war, Fajwel Szyld, his father Icek and his wife Dwojra lived in the house in Wojsławice. Fajwel worked as a shoemaker and traded in leather. The museum house is a replica of a timber building erected in 1922, with a brick foundation and a shingled roof.
The blue kitchen is furnished in white: a cupboard base, dish shelf, table, stools and bench. These are replicas of items the family may have used, rather than a surviving set of their possessions. Two stoves have been reconstructed: a cooking stove with a bread oven, and a tiled stove shared by the kitchen and workshop. The latter has a Shabbat warming compartment, closed with cast-iron doors, which kept previously prepared food warm during Shabbat.
The shoemaker's workshop depicts 1938. A worktable with tool drawers stands beneath the window, its raised edge preventing small objects from rolling off. Leather was cut on a separate table using cardboard templates; lasts and finished shoes occupy the shelves.
