The castle chapel was placed in the east tower, one of the four parts of the complex linked by the defensive wall. The tower has a semi-elliptical plan five and a half metres wide, and the chapel occupies its upper floor. On the ground floor, on the east side, is the so-called treasury.
The chapel interior is covered by a ribbed cross vault. The Sulima coat of arms was placed on the keystone of the vault. It was the emblem of the Oporowski family, to which the founder of the castle, Archbishop Władysław Oporowski, belonged. In the early 17th century the Oporowski inheritance passed to the Tarnowski family of the Rola coat of arms.
The medieval residence combined defensive, residential and religious functions in one compact layout on the island. The chapel tower was built during Władysław Oporowski's expansion of the residence in the 15th century. The chapel survived the repairs of the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries, which brought only minor alterations to the castle. The thorough conservation of the castle in 1962-1965 was preceded by archaeological and architectural research. In 1945 the castle complex became state property, and since 1949 it has housed a museum.
