Red panda
A reddish resident of mountain forests whose life revolves around branches and bamboo.
A tartalom nyelve
The red panda moves along branches with the help of a long, bushy tail that keeps it balanced. Reddish fur contrasts with dark legs and belly, while pale areas form a distinctive facial mask. It belongs to the family Ailuridae, within the order Carnivora. That relationship does not mean that most of its meals consist of meat.
Bamboo leaves are its main food. It also eats other plant material, flowers and berries, occasionally adding birds’ eggs and insects. Its natural home is in Asian mountain forests with a bamboo understorey. Trees provide places to rest and routes above the ground. When descending, a panda can climb headfirst, gripping the trunk with its hind claws.
Activity peaks around dawn and dusk; much of the day is spent resting. Pandas sleep on branches or in sheltered parts of trees. Forest loss, poaching and illegal trade threaten wild populations. Protecting this animal means retaining the whole forest environment, from tall trees to the bamboo growing beneath them.

A red panda with a bushy tail can move nimbly along branches. Its tail helps it balance, rather like your arms when you stretch them out to walk along a narrow line. When climbing down headfirst, it grips the trunk with its hind claws. Its pale face contrasts with its dark legs and belly.
Bamboo leaves are its most important food. It also eats other plants and sometimes insects and birds’ eggs. In the wild it lives in Asia’s mountain forests. It needs trees for climbing and bamboo for meals.
Pandas are busiest at dawn and dusk. They often rest in the middle of the day, so a sleeping animal is following its natural rhythm. Clearing forests takes away places where pandas live and find food.
