Meerkat
An African plains mammal whose group relies on underground shelters and alert sentries.
A tartalom nyelve
While one meerkat scans the surroundings, others can search for food. A sentry watches for danger and warns the group with a call. After an alarm, the animals disappear into a system of chambers and tunnels. Their underground refuge is therefore part of the whole colony’s everyday safety, as well as a place to sleep.
Meerkats come from the dry, open plains of southern Africa and belong to the mongoose family. They have slender bodies, grey-brown fur and a pointed muzzle that helps them reach small prey. Powerful claws on their front paws are used for digging. Finding food often means working right at the surface of the ground or beneath it.
Insects are their main food, but they also eat small vertebrates, eggs and some plant material. They are active during the day, when they forage, bask and groom. Different individuals take turns on sentry duty, and a lookout may use its tail for support. Group life thus combines finding meals, using shared shelters and responding to warnings from companions.
Gyerekeknek
One meerkat stands looking into the distance while the others search for food. It is the group’s sentry. If it spots danger, it gives a warning call. The meerkats then escape into underground chambers and tunnels. Visitors should never try to frighten them or trigger an alarm.
In the wild they live on southern Africa’s dry plains. Strong claws on their front paws dig into the soil. Their narrow muzzle helps them reach small prey. They mainly eat insects, but also small vertebrates, eggs and plant material.
Meerkats are active by day. They forage, warm themselves in the sun and groom their fur. Different animals take turns keeping watch. A standing sentry can use its tail as an extra support.
