Capybara
A social riverbank rodent with webbing between its toes.
A tartalom nyelve
The capybara combines life on land with confident movement through water. It inhabits riverbanks and marshy ground, and its toes are joined by webbing. This feature helps it swim. An adult reaches 100-130 centimetres in length and weighs 35-65 kilograms. It is a large rodent whose body and habitat are closely associated with water.
Capybaras do not lead solitary lives. They form groups containing males, females and young, sometimes numbering several dozen animals. A dominant male usually leads the group and drives away rivals. Group size varies, from a pair to a much larger community. Relationships between members are an important part of their daily lives.
To communicate, capybaras use whistles and grunts. They also mark their territory with scent from glands near the anus. Their food consists of grasses, fruit and shrub leaves. Pregnancy lasts about 150 days, after which one to seven young are born. The group’s life unfolds beside rivers, in surroundings that provide both plant food and places to swim.
