Rebuilding after the fire
Blocked crenellations and an altered roof record the rebuilding of the tower's upper section.
A tartalom nyelve
A fire in 1575 affected the tower's upper levels. Rebuilding altered its summit: the gaps in the original crenellations were filled, the walls were raised slightly and a new roof was added. The old wall walk no longer looked as it had in the medieval residence.
Traces of the blocked crenellations remain in the structure. Their outline reveals the relationship between the earlier wall edge and its later extension. A complete reconstruction is not needed to see the difference: part of the earlier arrangement is still embedded in the walls. The present silhouette is not the unchanged outline of the founder's building.
New window openings and two projecting latrines were also added during the 16th century. These served domestic life rather than defence. Not every alteration from that century can be assigned directly to the post-fire rebuilding. The windows, latrines and altered summit reflect different interventions in an older structure: the stone walls remained, while the building's appearance and use changed.
