Scouts' House
A building from the former YMCA centre in Wieżyca, saved from demolition and reconstructed using more than 700 surviving components.
Lingua dei contenuti
More than 700 components were saved from the Scout House when it was due to be demolished. The wooden building was brought from a holiday centre in Wieżyca to Szymbark, where surviving parts were restored and missing sections replaced. The structure seen today combines historic fabric with reconstruction work.
The house's history is linked to the YMCA, the Young Men's Christian Association, which financed a youth centre in Wieżyca-Kolano. The house was one of its larger buildings. Before the war, it hosted cultural, sporting and tourism activities associated with scouting in Kashubia.
The outbreak of the Second World War interrupted these activities, and the Germans took over the site. The centre was used as a prisoner-of-war camp. Relocating the house preserved a physical trace of a place whose uses changed with the region's wartime history.
