L’oggetto

Kauri, or Agathis australis, is listed among the unusual trees in Gołubie’s garden. It belongs to the araucaria family. It grows naturally on New Zealand’s North Island, and its presence in the collection introduces a plant from a distant part of the Southern Hemisphere.

Kauri leaves are broad, thick and leathery. They stay on the tree throughout the year and look quite different from the needles of many conifers familiar in Poland. This feature shows how varied the leaves of conifers can be.

A kauri’s silhouette changes with age: young trees have a more columnar shape, while older ones develop broad crowns. The seed cones are rounded, and the seeds have wings. Mature trees in their homeland reach heights of tens of metres. This describes the species’ potential in its natural environment, rather than the size of the Gołubie specimen; the leaves offer the easiest starting point when examining the collection.

Kauri’s scientific name is Agathis australis. This species is documented in Gołubie’s garden collection. Its natural home is New Zealand’s North Island, far from Kashubia. It belongs to the araucaria family.

Look at its leaves. They are broad, thick and leathery, even though kauri is a conifer. It stays green all year. Conifers can therefore look quite different from a familiar pine or spruce.

Young kauri trees have a narrower, column-like outline, while older ones develop a broad crown. They produce rounded seed cones and winged seeds. In New Zealand, mature trees can grow to tens of metres tall. This describes the species in its homeland, not the size of the plant seen in the garden.
