Medicinal plants
A herb collection and activities teaching identification through leaves, flowers and scent.
Lingua dei contenuti
Medicinal plants have their own section in Gołubie, separate from the ecological and ornamental plant collections. Useful plants are also explored in the “Herb Corner - Medicinal Plants” programme. It covers species used as herbs and culinary plants.
During these activities, participants learn to identify plants by their scent, leaf shape and flowers. Each characteristic offers different information, so examining the whole plant reveals more than comparing a single detail. Looking at leaves helps reveal their structure, while flowers show differences between plants with a similar green outline.
The garden’s labels help with identification: they give the Polish name, the Latin name and the botanical family. Matching names to a plant’s appearance turns looking at a flowerbed into a botanical exercise. The collection and activities focus on plant identity and uses.

This part of the garden introduces medicinal plants. The garden also runs “Herb Corner” activities about herbs and culinary plants. They offer a chance to discover how to recognise a plant before giving it a name.
A clue may lie in the shape of a leaf, the appearance of a flower or its scent. A green patch seen from a distance tells you little. Looking carefully at different parts of a plant helps reveal differences. This is the kind of identification taught in the programme.
Garden labels give the Polish name, the Latin name and the botanical family. Try finding all three. The Latin name may look difficult, but it helps botanists identify the same plant in different countries. The herb collection combines looking at plants with learning their names and uses.
