Yellow Lake
A small pool near the lower entrance, within the former Nadzieja mine. Its funnel-shaped hollow and occasional drying reveal the relationship between water and bedrock.
Lingua dei contenuti
Yellow Lake occupies part of the former Nadzieja mine, close to Purple Lake. It lies in the lowest section of the walk from Wieściszowice. Its small, funnel-shaped hollow concentrates water in a compact area, unlike its elongated neighbour. The pool can be intermittent: during dry weather, the water may disappear. The shape of the working then remains the clearest trace of mining, rather than the colour of the water.
Its yellowish tint is associated with pyrite in the floor and walls of the working. This is a hollow excavated by miners, rather than a basin carved by a glacier. Pyrite-bearing rock supplied the local production of sulphuric acid. When extraction ended, water took over the former working space. The little pool therefore belongs to the same industrial landscape as nearby Purple Lake, although the two have acquired separate names based on their colours.
