L’oggetto

Glazed stoneware is the material of the sculptures by Lubomír Šilar displayed at the museum. Their ceramic surfaces and the shaping of their volumes are as important as their recognisable subjects. The selected works repeatedly depict women and animals, especially young bulls, horses and other hoofed animals. Šilar simplified their outlines and brought individual figures together in larger compositions. Their movement and the natural colours of his ceramics recall the paintings of Altamira translated into sculpture. This link between simplified animal images and three-dimensional forms explains the exhibition’s name.

During his many years at KERAMO in Prague, Šilar moved from wheel-thrown forms towards modelling with slabs of clay. This change of technique provides context for the figures and their complex arrangements. Born in nearby Horní Čermná in 1932, he trained in Prague, including in Otto Eckert’s ceramics and porcelain studio. His work encompassed independent sculptures, pieces for architectural settings and designs for functional ceramics produced in workshops. The museum’s selection focuses on his sculptural work.

Young bulls, horses and human figures were made from stoneware, a type of ceramic. Lubomír Šilar covered his works with glaze. He simplified the shapes of animals and conveyed their movement. He also grouped several figures into larger compositions.

Altamira is a famous cave with paintings. The movement and natural colours of Šilar’s ceramics recall such animal images, although his works are sculptures. At KERAMO in Prague, he developed modelling with slabs of clay, moving away from wheel-thrown forms.

Šilar was born near Lanškroun, in Horní Čermná, in 1932. He later studied ceramics and porcelain in Prague. Besides sculptures, he designed useful objects and works for buildings.
