L’oggetto

Zdeněk Kolářský worked on different scales, from coins and medals to figurative sculptures and portrait busts. His cabinet also contains reliefs, plaques and models, allowing finished objects to be compared with forms made before their production. The works include designs for coins and for medals made by striking or casting. Together, they show different approaches to small-scale sculpture. A separate section features designs for insignia commissioned by universities, towns and other institutions. These objects signify an office or role, combining the qualities of jewellery with a ceremonial purpose.

Kolářský brought the human figure together with text, drawing on his experience in typography and logo design. He worked in different metals and combined them within individual pieces. From 1947 to 1951 he first trained in figurine design at the glassmaking school in Železný Brod. He later graduated from Karel Štipl’s studio at Prague’s UMPRUM in 1956. Many of his commissions came from towns and universities in eastern Bohemia. Lanškroun, which displays part of his work, awarded him honorary citizenship.
