The monastery pharmacy furnishings travelled far before returning to the town.

L’oggetto

The pharmacy was established around 1750 for the monastery of the Brothers Hospitallers beside the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary in Nové Město nad Metují. It was originally housed in the monastery's Loreto chapel. It operated for more than two centuries, continuing to serve local people for several years after the monastery was dissolved in 1950. Its furnishings belong to the history of everyday medical care as well as to that of a religious interior.

After the pharmacy closed, the furniture went first to Kuks and then to Brno. It was found at Špilberk Castle in 2005 and returned to its town of origin the following year. Since 2006, the restored pharmacy furnishings have formed part of the museum display. The vessels include painted wooden medicine jars, quite different from the glass bottles associated with later pharmacies.
